A Burger King In Germany Was Demoted To Just ‘Burger’ After Losing Franchise Rights

Someone named @ilovesubnautica on X — the website everyone still refers to as Twitter — shared the most hilarious Burger King location in Germany. According to them, the spot gained such a bad reputation that Burger King decided to remove the franchise from the larger chain. In response to the exile, the notorious location has made the bold decision to go by simply ‘Burger’, rather than Burger King. And the funniest part is that it kept the original sign and just erased ‘King’. 

Photos reveal a hasty makeover at the rebranded location, with remnants of its Burger King past still visible. This quirky transformation is matched by a menu that humorously riffs on classic BK items. Instead of the traditional Whopper, you’ll find the “Classic Fux” on offer. The menu features several items with “fux” in their names, including the “Big Fux XL” and the “Bacon Fux.” Despite the playful name, “fux” is actually derived from “fuchs,” the German word for fox.

The menu also features various chicken sandwiches and boasts a tagline: “Diese Fuxe gibt es auch als plant-based,” indicating that some items are available in a plant-based option. The comments section has been a riot, with one user joking, “Big Fux XL was my nickname in high school,” and another quipping, “Zero Fux Given.” Some praised the restaurant’s rebellious spirit, with one commenter saying, “Hell yeah, more chain restaurants should go indie like this.” However, @ilovesubnautica pointed out, “The thing is, they were forced to because they were kicked out of the BK chain for being, like, the worst restaurant I’ve ever been to.”

Burger is located in Ingolstadt, Germany, about an hour from Munich by train, according to @ilovesubnautica.

It’s not the first ex-franchise to go rogue; scrolling through the thread, I discovered several “franchise rebellions.” One user shared a photo of a place called BK Pizza that used to be a Little Caesars before it “rebelled.” Another mentioned a spot in San Jose, CA called Pizza Guys, which was formerly a Papa John’s before breaking away 20 years ago. Whether or not these stories are historically accurate, the concept is intriguing. With the rapid changes in the fast-food industry, this could become a growing trend.
